Impaired Upstream Passage
Small Dams and Diversions
An inline pond created on a private taxlot near the headwaters of Johnson Creek in the community of Cottrell was created several decades ago. This 0.73 acre pond not only blocks fish passage, but also heats up Johnson Creek. In 2018, JCWC temperature monitoring showed as much as 8.3C (15F) change in temperature through the pond (17.8C to 26.1 C).
The earthen dam, including up to six feet of fill, will be removed, to restore a free-flowing creek through this area. The property owner uses this pond for stock/horse watering. We will work with OWRD for a solution through groundwater to provide small watering tanks for the horse(s).
