Project Overview

Basics

Degraded Channel and Riparian Areas
Degraded Channel Structure and Complexity
Lower Abernethy Large Wood Enhancement #3

  • Degraded Floodplain Connectivity and Function
  • Degraded Riparian Areas and Large Wood Recruitment
  • Invasive Species (Riparian / Terrestrial
  • Land uses that Impair Riparian Condition or Reduce Streamflow
  • Rural and Forestry Roads

Deferred
The project will enhance in-stream habitat in Abernethy Creek downstream of Hidden Lake. Supplementing existing wood in the channel will increase complexity and increase floodplain/alcove connectivity providing a cool water refuge in a spring-fed off channel cove. The reach is known to provide spawning habitat for steelhead, coho, and Pacific lamprey based on ODFW spawning survey data. Large wood is intended to provide overhead cover and in-channel complexity for spawning adults and rearing juvenile fish. Riparian restoration will remove invasive species and restore native plants. Access for restoration will take place along an existing road entering the Hidden Lake Estates.

Focal Species

Focal Species

Coho salmon are known to spawn in this reach of lower Abernethy Creek and the lack of channel complexity, altered hydrology and reduced cover limit the ability for sorting of sediment to provide gravels and pools for spawning and rearing of juveniles.
Pacific lamprey redds have been detected in high numbers in lower Abernethy Creek. Good habitat for spawning and juvenile rearing exists in fine sediments which are abundant. This project will provide improved gravel recruitment and pool tail-outs with low gradient riffles to support increased spawning habitat for Pacific lamprey.
Winter steelhead are widely distributed in lower Abernethy Creek in the focal area of this project. Rearing in main and secondary channels will benefit by increasing complexity in stream for cover and forage opportunity.

Project Types

Project Types

Stakeholders include the Hidden Lake Estates Homeowners Association, the individual property owners where the work will be conducted, and adjacent property owners. Site visits, phone calls, and a Zoom presentation have engaged the stakeholders in discussion concerning the proposed work.
Construction of this project will be informed by similar restoration efforts in the lower Abernethy Creek watershed located near the Newell Creek confluence and at Holcomb Creek. Techniques used at these sites will provide guidance to inform approach, cost estimates, and riparian restoration work.
